LeaAnna Miller CPM, LM

Head Midwife/Owner

I am so happy to be serving the families of Richmond and surrounding rural areas. I had eight home births myself, beginning in 1995. Those experiences shaped my view of physiological birth and flamed my desire to be a midwife. I wish every woman everywhere could feel supported, heard and loved during their pregnancy.

My passion is holding space for women as they do something they never dreamed they could do. I love traveling, working in low resource settings, learning about other cultures, hiking, reading, music, riding my horse, any form of fire, growing herbs and making medicine and spending time with my family. I am finishing my certification in craniosacral therapy and myofascial release this year and am trained in breech without borders as well as certified to teach helping babies breathe and helping mothers survive bleeding globally.

Midwife

My journey into midwifery began with the birth of my nephew in 2022, during which my sister invited me into one of the most sacred spaces I’ve ever entered. My entire perspective of God-given strength, beauty, and tenderness was pushed deeper than I could have imagined.

Not long after, I began training through NARMs PEP track. I am so excited to have completed that training under phenomenal preceptors, and since passing my exam I am now a Certified Professional Midwife. I am trained with Breech without Borders, for Breech and Twin deliveries safely at home. It is my joy to walk with women, empowering them to know and trust their intuition and strength, and to rely on the strength of our Creator. I believe the way we walk with women has the power to result in transformation rather than trauma. It is my privilege to empower, advocate for, listen to, and accompany women through the transformative seasons of womanhood, wherever they may lead, while maintaining a safe and peaceful environment for mamas & babies. My educational background is in intercultural communication and leadership. I lived in the Middle East, and was part of starting a women’s health initiative there. It is my hope to partner with and serve women from every stage of life, and every ethnic background, each in their unique journeys. I love a good cortado, sunshine, and cheering others on in this journey of life.

Backup Midwife

Hello!

All about midwifery.

My journey started in August of 2010 when I began school with National College of Midwifery  and became a student with a small homebirth practice in my home town of Boise, Idaho.  After 6 months I joined the busiest birth center in Idaho.

I had amazing preceptors, one that had been practicing midwifery since the 70’s! They were both humble and wise. I learned so much about the practice, and the joy of being a midwife from 8 different seasoned midwives. In May of 2012 I finished all my clinicals and schooling. I passed the NARM in August of 2012 and received my certified professional midwife (CPM) and Idaho state license. I promptly started my own homebirth practice, The Birds and Bees in Boise, Idaho. In October of 2016 our family moved to Detroit, Michigan, to do inner city missions. I again worked at a birth center before starting my homebirth practice Seën Midwifery in Detroit, in 2021. I also volunteered with street medicine group focusing on pregnant mamas. In the beginning of 2025, our family moved to Richmond, Virginia where I have continued my homebirth practice, now called Bluebird Homebirth. I like names What’s in a name? I think they're important. The first time I ever saw a bluebird was at our new home here in Richmond. I immediately loved the little fluffy blue bird. When I looked up the meaning of bluebird the words happiness and hope came up for the little fluffy joyful bird. I believe the world could use a little more of both happiness and hope. This is what I believe pregnancy and birth should be about, the joy of growing a new life and hope that the future will be better because of it. Furthermore! As a midwife, I’m a big fan of evidenced-based care and informed consent. Fancy words to say the things most midwives already know; evidence says birth is normal and doesn’t (often) need interventions. Informed consent provides information about risks and benefits of all the modern things added to pregnancy and birth these days - knowledge can be power. I don’t shy away from taking about all the risks and benefits, turns out life is full of risk and pregnancy and birth are a normal part of life. Every family has the right to know and decide for themselves what is best for their family. Whether that’s all the things recommended or none. And I support whatever you choose. OH! And one more thing... My 3rd (brilliant) daughter, Lucille, is starting midwifery school in the fall! She has been my assistant the past couple of years. The best part! My family! I have 7 brilliant children (seriously they are best ones out there) and 3 joyful grandchildren and counting…. We all live in Richmond. None of us are from here or have family here but one kid moved here for fun.. and then another one... and then we all came, and it’s the best being by all our kids and grandkids! (I attended all their births, also the best!) We love adventure, missions, foster care (we were foster parents from 2008-2025) camping, mountain biking, BBQs, family dinners, and painting. Most of all we love the Creator of everything good, Jesus!

Elaina Barron

Office Manager/Midwife Support Staff

She provides administrative support to staff at Newlife Midwifery and Wellness. Elaina is a long time resident of Virginia. As a young teen she volunteered in animal rescue and later at a veterinary practice. As a young adult she worked in Fire and EMS as a Paramedic and Firefigter for a number of years.

During those years she took on a role to help coordinate central Virginia's EMS patient transport via air and ground. After taking a step back, she spent time on a long-held passion for horses doing work coordinating events in Northern Virginia horse country. Her fondness for the healing arts, organization and education, have been her strong foundation for her thus far. Finding through all the paths she has taken that she finds great reward in supporting those who care for others. Since becoming a mother, she enjoys mud puddle days, sand boxes, and walks that take long way with pit stops to pick flowers, look at rocks or just play in the sun. "I've had so many adventures in my life, they were just preparation for being a mother all along." When she is not in the office you can often find her working on her master knitting certification, baking cakes and treats for Cake4kids charity, rock hunting, or going hands on with botany, while listening to music or an audio book.

Home Birth & Midwifery Care FAQs

What is the New Life Midwifery approach to care?

At New Life Midwifery, we believe birth is more than a medical event. It is a transformative journey that deserves individualized, relationship-centered care. We take the time to truly know the families we serve, providing education, support, and guidance so you can make informed decisions with confidence. Our approach is rooted in the midwives model of care, which values informed choice, continuity of care, and trust in the natural process of pregnancy and birth. We believe that nutrition, lifestyle, emotional wellbeing, and mindfulness all play an important role in a healthy pregnancy. When appropriate, we may recommend herbs, homeopathy, nutritional support, and other holistic resources while also helping you access additional medical care if needed.

Who can have a Homebirth?

Mothers who are low risk, committed to taking good care of themselves and baby and who live in a safe, healthy environment.

Do you take insurance?

Insurance does not cover out of hospital birth with a CPM. We are happy to document your care and encourage you to ask for reimbursement from your insurance. We will work out payment plans so that no-one has to make this choice based on finances. Most insurance policies will cover your lab work and ultrasounds.

Do I need to go to a hospital for my pregnancy ultrasounds?

You certainly can if you prefer. However, we proudly partner with Longevity Ultrasound, a mobile ultrasound service that offers a more convenient and personalized experience for many of our families. Depending on availability, you may be able to schedule your ultrasound right here at our office or at another participating midwifery practice in the area.

If you’re considering giving birth naturally and you have any hesitations at all, go talk to LeaAnna. Seriously. She’s incredible! She helped us with our questions about everything from diet to the stages of pregnancy to the birthing process itself. She was always available, night and day and was consistently kind to us (even when we woke her up at 4 AM). Even though we’re now out of state, when my husband and I talk about trying for our next baby, our first response is “How do we get to LeaAnna?”Give her a call! She is so great!
